Figuring out what you want to do with your life can be a pretty daunting thought -- especially for students who still have so much to experience. That's why La Pietra's Guest Artist Program brings in renowned painters, sculptors, jewelry makers, and even photographers and digital imagists, to share the talents they've cultivated throughout their careers. Hearing from professionals with real-world experience gives students an inside look at different industries and a chance to ignite a spark that will set them on a path to discover their purpose.

Mrs. Tesoro's Digital Imaging and Photoshop class welcomed renowned photographer Ric Noyle to the classroom this week. Noyle has lived in Honolulu, Hawaii, for the past 35 years, but was born in Cape Town, South Africa. From food to people, events and resorts, Noyle's photography not only showcases a global perspective, but also his strong technical skills and unique vision. The creator of the annual PhotoCON event spoke to students about the importance of lighting, how to plan for it, and how some simple changes can help you capture a better photo.

His first lesson? Identifying "ugly" lighting! Students stood in various levels and patterns of sunlight in the Art Courtyard and learned about the lighting conditions that make for ideal photos. But what happens when you find yourself in harsh sunlight or lighting that is less than ideal? Noyle showed students that making simple adjustments, like moving your model or turning them, can make all the difference.

A big lesson students took away from class? Fancy gear like reflectors and expensive cameras are nice, but photography is about technique. By having students take photos with their own iPhones, Noyle hoped to empower them with skills to use the technology they have right in their pockets.

Mahalo to Ric Noyle for taking the time to give our students this unique experience!
