SUMMER READING

To encourage your child to continue reading outside of school, our English Department has put together some summer reading options. The lists of titles cover a wide range of interests to choose from. We also encourage families to get a library card and visit their local library. If you have a Kindle, you can borrow ebooks using the Libby App by OverDrive.

Books allow readers to escape their own point of view and inhabit the lives and spaces of others. Sometimes the themes found in these books may not be parallel to parents' traditions or values. For example, the award-winning novel, The Hunger Games, portrays the effects of a totalitarian government, the financial gaps in society and class, and the struggles of finding one's identity. However, the violence depicted may be too strong for some families. If this occurs, the English teachers of La Pietra support and respect the parents’ decision to steer their child to an alternative selection. We do our best to research and read the texts in our class libraries and on summer reading lists; however, not all content may be deemed appropriate by some parents. We emphasize to our students that their reading choices should align with their families’ values. Thanks for your understanding and support. (Last updated May 2022)
