Guest Artist Tina Cintron works with students on perspective drawings
As part of the Guest Artist Program, La Pietra was proud to host multimedia artist Tina Cintron this past week! While visiting from the Big Island, Cintron spent three days on campus working with students in the Mixed Media, Graphic Design, and Art History classes.
Affectionately known as the "Art Lady," she has lived and worked extensively in international settings and has spent over twenty years teaching drawing and watercolor to students in Hawaii, Washington, and California.
Cintron worked on several different drawing projects with La Pietra students. With students in the Mixed Media and Graphic Design classes, she started by going over basic shapes and how you can add depth and dimension to your drawings by building with those shapes.
Once students had an understanding of basic shapes, she went on to lessons on perspective. By understanding angles and how to manipulate the ways shapes sit on a plane, students were able to create the illusion of depth on a flat surface in their drawings.
Students translate portraits of themselves into Renaissance paintings
With the Art History students, the class first started with an introduction to Renaissance art, identifying the main characteristics of the time period and getting an understanding of what was considered beautiful at the time. Ultimately, by studying a photo of themselves and comparing it with other images from the period, students would end up drawing themselves in the style of a Renaissance portrait.
Cintron began the drawing lesson by teaching students the basic shapes that make up the human figure and how to add more detailed features from there. She encouraged students to be aware of their entire arm while drawing so as to be precise with their strokes.
Cintron returns to La Pietra to teach students as part of Guest Artist program
Cintron has been a guest artist on campus in the past, and the Art Department was excited to welcome her back to share her knowledge with a new group of students. La Pietra's Guest Artist Program allows students to learn from renowned painters, sculptors, jewelry makers, and even photographers and digital imagists. Hearing from professionals with real-world experience gives students an opportunity to learn valuable skills that could set them on a path to discover their purpose.
Earlier this year, La Pietra also welcomed photographer Ric Noyle to teach students about the importance of lighting.
Mahalo to Tina Cintron for taking the time to teach our students these drawing fundamentals!
