Breast cancer is a topic that hits close to home for many in the La Pietra community. And with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it served as a spark for a number of community service projects to help spread awareness.

During the last two weeks of October, the Parent Faculty Association (PFA) teamed up with Student Council to hold a scarf and beanie collection. The community came together to make the drive a big success, ending with a total of 69 scarves and beanies, many handmade by members of the school community. Each also included a handwritten note with words of encouragement to the cancer patients who will receive them.

"Being able to spread awareness and help those who are going through the fight is something that I value very much," said Dayna N., La Pietra senior and Student Council member. "I am so proud of the La Pietra Community, as we donated over 60 beanies and scarves!"

Dayna, along with fellow senior and Student Council Member Victoria H., joined 6th grade parent Connie Doma at Kapi’olani Medical Center to deliver the donations. Doma served as the PFA's team lead on the initiative.

“Kapi’olani Women’s Cancer Center is grateful for the generosity of students from La Pietra - Hawai’i School for Girls," said Emily Naula, Kapi’olani Health Foundation's senior development officer. "It is heartwarming to see young students give back to the community and support our patients.”

La Pietra seniors Victoria and Dayna both hope to have careers in the medical field one day. Victoria has been considering a path in pediatrics ever since she was young, while Dayna, on the other end of the spectrum, hopes to go into geriatric physical therapy. Both worthy causes to help those in our community!

This donation served as the completion of a series of community service projects that took place in October. Earlier in the month, members of the Student Council Breast Cancer Awareness Committee organized the school's first-ever silent auction fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. La Pietra students and faculty also joined the Komen Hawaii Race for the Cure as Team Pink Panthers and raised a total of $300.

Mahalo for your participation in these events and for helping to support those who have been affected by breast cancer! If you are looking to learn more about the disease and want to help spread awareness, you can find additional resources from the Susan G. Komen Foundation here:
