La Pietra community donates over 1,200 cans to Hawaii Foodbank

National Honor Society members tally food drive donations

Over the last few months, La Pietra's National Honor Society (NHS) hosted a food drive on campus, encouraging everyone in the community to donate what they could to help Hawaii's hungry. To make things a little more competitive, NHS announced that the grade who raised the most cans per capita would win an ice cream party.

After tallying the results, NHS is proud to announce that La Pietra raised a total of 1,242 cans, and seniors took first place with 13.5 cans per capita! Coming in second were the sophomores with 10.6 cans per capita and the 6th graders raised 10.3 cans per capita, putting them in third. Congratulations, and a job well done in pulling together to support this important cause!

"Being part of the National Honor Society, it gives me a chance to give back to the community," says NHS member Dayna N. "I really like helping other people -- helping others to see that there is kindness out there and there are people who care even when their circumstances are different than ours."

National Honor Society on the importance of giving back to the community

Hunger is a huge problem around the world and even here at home in our islands. In fact, half of Hawaii's households with children are food insecure. It's an unsettling statistic that really hit home with NHS Co-Advisor Shari Lynn.

"It doesn't mean that they don't have anything to eat, but the next day they might not have as much as they actually need," she explains.

The NHS is based on four pillars: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. "These are four things that we value very highly here, and it seems to me that our students already possess these four characteristics," she adds. "Watching our students grow and become the amazing young women that they do is what makes this job terrific."
