7th-grader Wins Annual NHS Spelling Bee

December 14th, 2021

7th-grader Emma M. spells the winning word: "Mournful"

Students were abuzz with excitement ahead of the annual National Honor Society (NHS) Spelling Bee! 22 intrepid middle schoolers gathered in the Student Learning Center to await the words they would be asked to spell. Their fate was in the hands of Ms. Eden Lee, who once again served as the event's pronouncer. Every round, she gave speller after speller a word that could bring them one step closer to victory or defeat.

Eight spellers were eliminated in Round 1, leaving 14 to participate in Round 2. At the start of Round 3, that number was cut in half with only seven spellers remaining. By Round 4, there were four spellers left standing. One by one the bell sounded, signaling a misspelling for the next three students.

The last speller remaining was 7th-grader Emma M., who took to the microphone to spell "dutifully." If she spelt the word correctly, all she would have to do is spell one more word to win the bee. Her peers erupted in applause after she successfully spelled the word, ready to take on her final challenge: "Mournful." Emma spelt the winning word with ease, and earned the title of this year's La Pietra 2021 Spelling Bee Champion!

This year's runner-up was 6th-grader Kai W. and third place went to 6th-grader Dylan P.  All three winners received Jamba Juice gift cards as prizes, and both Emma and Kai will go on to represent La Pietra in the District Bee in 2022. Good luck, spellers!

After the bee, NHS advisor Mrs. Shari Lynn passed out certificates to all of the participants to congratulate them on a job well done. The group posed outside in the Fountain Courtyard for a quick group photo op and to celebrate the winners.
