La Pietra Student celebrates Sisterhood in Poem for World Poetry Day
March 21st, 2022
Every year, World Poetry Day is celebrated on March 21. A student in the 9th grade submitted the poem above as part of the "Poem of the Week," a creative outlet to encourage students to put pen to paper and create their own art through words. At La Pietra, we encourage students to discover their own unique purpose in a nurturing environment that encourages self-exploration, creativity and critical thinking.
World Poetry Day was founded in 1999 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It was proposed and adopted to “give fresh recognition and impetus to national, regional and international poetry movements.” The organization hoped to inspire the celebration of poetry all over the world, preserve endangered languages, and stimulate poetic expression through this day.
Did you know? The earliest poetry is believed to have surfaced with the “Epic of Gilgamesh” some time during 2000 B.C., but it is likely that poetry existed even before the spread of literacy.
