June 6th, 2022
Freshman Ayla P. takes the ILH Intermediate wrestling championship title in her weight class.
La Pietra's Athletic Program had many highlights this past school year despite facing the challenges of COVID-19, and participation numbers remained strong! Of the 143 students enrolled at La Pietra, 89 joined at least one Lady Panthers or Pac-5 Wolfpack team for a 62 percent participation rate. 35 percent of the students joined two or more athletic teams during the year, and 100 percent of the sixth grade class (27 students) participated on at least one athletic team.
La Pietra senior gets unique leadership opportunity to teach 6th grade swim team
In the Fall Sports season, students participated on nine La Pietra and Pac-5 teams. The Lady Panthers varsity volleyball team led by ILH Division III All-Stars Hannah H. (1st team) and Ava A. (2nd team) and La Pietra alumna and head coach Carmen Sharkey (’15) finished as the runner-up for ILH Division III title. The fall also saw 15 sixth graders having their very first Lady Panthers team experience by joining our 6th grade swimming team. Senior Emma R. volunteered as an assistant, giving back to the swim program that helped spark her passion for being in the water.
The Winter sports season saw nine Lady Panthers and Wolfpack teams include our La Pietra students on their team rosters. In Precision Air Riflery, junior Ava E. took the ILH Junior Varsity Individual Championship title for our La Pietra team while freshman Ayla P. took the ILH Intermediate wrestling championship title in her weight class, leading her Pac-5 Intermediate girls wrestling team to the ILH title.
The varsity basketball team, led by juniors and ILH All-Stars Nina B. and Grace K. had a strong season coming up just one game short of the ILH Division III Basketball title.
Sophomore Elyssa A. finished in 6th place in the 800 M and 10th place in the 1500 M races at the ILH Junior Varsity Championship Finals.
The Spring sports season allowed our student-athletes to compete with fewer COVID-19 restrictions in place. La Pietra students took full advantage, joining 11 La Pietra and Pac-5 teams. Senior and La Pietra varsity golfer Jolie C. finished in 3rd Place overall at the ILH Girls Golf Championships, and along with her teammate Esther J. (’23), qualified to compete at the 2022 HHSAA Golf Championships on Maui. Esther finished in a tie for 10th place and Jolie tied for 13th place in the state respectively.
Varsity Tennis players Mia C. and Abby M. paired together to represent La Pietra in the Clay Benham ILH Postseason Varsity Tennis tournament, making it to the second round before bowing out to the top seeded doubles team in the ILH.
La Pietra also fielded our own junior varsity and intermediate track & field team for the first time in over 15 years (previously with Pac-5)! The three intermediate runners and seven junior varsity runners, led by sophomore Elyssa A., represented well throughout the ILH season. Elyssa finished in 6th place in the 800 M and 10th place in the 1500 M races at the ILH Junior Varsity Championship Finals.
Junior Nina B. and her mom after winning the Athlete of the Year Award.
During the Academic Awards Ceremony, La Pietra's Athlete of the Year Award was given to sophomore Nina B., who was the team MVP and ILH All-Star in both the varsity volleyball and varsity basketball teams. The Unsung Heroine Award was given to Grace K., who was an exceptional leader on both the varsity volleyball and varsity basketball teams, with her enthusiasm, work ethic, and positive attitude helping her teammates to achieve and find success throughout the season.
Congratulations to all of our student-athletes, and we'll see you out on the court and on the field next year! We are extremely thankful to the La Pietra and Pac-5 coaches, school administration, and especially our student-athletes and their families for the support this year.
