Ride the Wave: Yearbook Staff Reveals Theme for 2021-2022

May 16th, 2022

Yearbook staff members Sadie G. and Mia C. show off their hard work.

On Friday, May 13, La Pietra's Yearbook Staff proudly revealed the 2021-2022 yearbook to students, faculty and staff during a special distribution ceremony over Zoom. In an effort to depict the vibrancy of our islands and study body, the staff chose Le‘ahi, or Diamond Head, to grace the cover. The iconic landmark has always held a special place in the hearts of La Pietra students and alumnae, as the school sits at its base.

"The theme we chose was 'Hawai‘i' with the phrase, 'ride the wave,'" reads the Yearbook Staff message ending the book. "We believe this saying conveys not only the journey we have experienced but also how we have adapted to the recent changes the world has endured and the journey we still have yet to begin."

Grade by grade, each class was called to the Student Learning Center to pick up the treasured books – gel pens in hand, ready to start the yearly tradition of yearbook signing.

With cover art by senior Hiro Kato-Teale and page dividers designed by members of the Yearbook Staff, the book is truly a unique work of art showcasing the talents of our La Pietra students.

"The yearbook includes scenery and landmarks on and near our campus that enriches the La Pietra experience," the Yearbook Staff message continues. "Thank you to the wonderful faculty and staff for all your support this year and to all of the students that contributed to our yearbook as it wouldn't be as brilliant without your help."

Shanti Alliance members put together buttons ahead of the Yearbook Distribution Ceremony.

As part of the Yearbook Distribution Ceremony, the Shanti Alliance also passed out buttons designed and created by students with the help of Dr. Kate Kane and Ms. Morgan Kelly. Each holds a unique message as part of the club's effort to promote a campus environment that is welcoming to people regardless of their gender identification and presentation. Some of these messages include, "Make your feminism trans-inclusive," "Trans rights are human rights," and "Respect pronouns."

"Messages of respect make a difference," said Club Advisor Dr. Kane. "Please wear yours proudly."

Mahalo to the Yearbook Staff for putting together such a vibrant collection of memories from the 2021-2022 school year! And thank you to all of our students, faculty and staff who continue to make our La Pietra community such a welcoming and accepting environment.
