alice guild KAHIAU AWARD

Sabrina C.

Artist Michael Powell and Head of School Josh Watson with Sabrina C. as the winner of the Alice Guild Kahiau Award.

Head of School Josh Watson closed the ceremony by announcing the winner of the Alice Guild Kahiau Award, senior Sabrina C. The award recognizes a student who exemplifies the spirit of kahiau – the Hawaiian concept of generosity of spirit and selfless giving, a willingness to help and give service without expectation of receiving anything in return.

This key value has been a part of La Pietra's school makeup since its earliest days, and Kahiau Award recipients are nominated by their peers. “She is an amazing role model. She has always been kind and open when talking to her, and she truly loves and cares about her community,” wrote one student. "She is who I would say perfectly exemplifies all the qualities that we cherish at La Pietra,” said another.

As part of the recognition for this award, artist Michael Powell donates an original painting to the winner, in honor of his long association with the school, and to honor his friend and former La Pietra Board Chair Mrs. Alice Guild. We were thrilled to have Mr. Powell at this year's awards ceremony.

Congratulations to Sabrina for representing our school so well by upholding its spirit of kahiau, and a job well done to all of the students who were honored for their hard work at this year's awards ceremony!
