La Pietra junior Megu Kurita will be heading to Pennsylvania this June to attend Wharton School’s Leadership in the Business World summer program. Megu is part of a select group of rising seniors accepted into the program and will have the opportunity to get a glimpse of Wharton’s undergraduate business curriculum while honing her leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.
Megu became interested in business about two years ago around the time her father passed away. Hearing about how members of the community remembered him as a great businessman motivated her to follow in his footsteps. Megu’s love of fashion inspired her to create an online store where customers could shop minimalist clothing and accessories.
“I like fashion, and I really like minimalistic fashion, but I never found online clothing stores that match my own style,” Megu said. After researching and creating a business plan throughout 2022, Megu launched her online store, Minimalist Self, in January 2023.
Thanks to a fund for student activities established by a private donor, Megu was able to attend the Hawaii Business Magazine's first annual Women Entrepreneurs Conference in May with her faculty advisor, Miya Huang. The conference focused on helping women grow their businesses by providing information about revenue growth opportunities and financial management, networking opportunities, and talks by successful women business owners. “I think that was a good opportunity for me to really explore more things about what I can do for my own business,” Megu said. “I was able to ask many questions, and I think that really gave me more resources and knowledge.”
Director of Advancement Leah Lee helped coordinate the conference opportunity. “Megu is so inspiring,” said Lee. “There's nothing better than supporting our next generation of women leaders.”
