Kaya Heimowitz is a member of La Pietra's Class of 2020. In May 2022, she found herself living on her own in Taipei, Taiwan. She had just finished her sophomore year at Puget Sound University in Tacoma, Washington, and was studying abroad shortly after declaring Chinese as her second major.
“I had no real concept of what Taiwan was like, and I had never been to Asia. It was a very steep learning curve,” Heimowitz says. “Living on your own is an experience, but I was living on my own in another country.”

Learning new languages has always come naturally for Heimowitz. She started taking French at La Pietra – Hawai‘i School for Girls in the eighth grade and continued her studies into the AP level during her high school years. She also began learning Chinese during her sophomore year in Ms. Miya Huang’s introductory level Chinese class.
