La Pietra Presents ROCK OF AGES on February 24 and 25
February 20th, 2023
Get ready to rock! La Pietra – Hawai‘i School for Girls is proud to present Rock of Ages, its student theatrical production, for two days only on February 24 and 25 at 7 p.m. Rock to songs by artists like Bon Jovi, Journey, Def Leppard, and all your ’80s favorites!
Set on L.A.'s famous Sunset Strip in 1987, Rock of Ages tells the story of Drew, a city boy from South Detroit, and Sherrie, a small-town girl, who have both travelled to L.A. to chase their dreams of making it big. This classic love story is set against the troubles at the Dupree Room, a “legendary temple of rock 'n' roll excellence” under threat by developers of being torn down and replaced with a strip mall.
“People should definitely come out and see Rock of Ages just because the students have been working so hard,” said theatre arts teacher Ixchel López, who also serves as show director and producer. “You’re really gonna come and feel like you’re at a rock concert more than you are just coming to see a school play. It involves the audience and being outside in this beautiful space is going to make you feel like you’re at the Greek Theatre in L.A.”
To put on a show of this scale, the Theatre Arts Department collaborated with school music and dance teachers, along with students and teachers from the Art Department, who put together many of the production’s props.
“For this show especially, I’ve been enjoying the singing aspect of it,” said Sabrina, a senior at La Pietra, who plays Justice Charlier. “Especially these songs – people know them. Our finale is ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ – really famous ’80s songs, and they’re really fun!”
