March 31st, 2025
Book In Time, by La Pietra's first Filmmkaing & Production Class, will be shown at the HIFF ‘Ōpio Fest.
La Pietra – Hawai‘i School for Girls is proud to announce that Book in Time, a short film created by students in the school’s Filmmaking & Production class, has been selected for the upcoming HIFF ‘Ōpio Fest. This honor highlights the creativity, technical skill, and storytelling talent of La Pietra’s student filmmakers as they showcase their work alongside peers from across Hawai‘i.
The film will be featured in the ‘Ōpio Fest Next Gen Showcase and Q&A, taking place on Saturday, April 12, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Consolidated Theatres Kahala. During this event, student-produced short films from high schools across the state will be screened, all competing for the HIFF ‘Ōpio Fest Best Student Film Award, which will be announced live at the event. Following the screening, student filmmakers will take part in a Q&A session, providing them with the opportunity to discuss their creative process and connect with the audience.
Book in Time tells the story of a teenage girl who, after discovering her grandmother’s old yearbook, is transported back in time to experience her grandmother’s senior year. Through this journey, she gains a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made to give her the opportunities she has today.
"Our students put so much heart and dedication into bringing this story to life in what was our first ever Filmmaking & Production Class. I’m incredibly proud of the creativity and teamwork they demonstrated throughout the process," said Ixchel López, Filmmaking & Production teacher and executive producer of the film. "Having their work recognized by HIFF ‘Ōpio Fest is an incredible achievement, and I can’t wait for audiences to experience their vision on screen."
La Pietra’s participation in HIFF ‘Ōpio Fest reflects the school’s commitment to fostering creativity, confidence, and hands-on learning experiences that empower young women to lead lives of purpose. For those unable to attend in person, Book in Time will also be available for a virtual screening from April 14 to April 21, allowing audiences to enjoy the student showcase online via HIFF.ORG.
